Phosphate Buffered Saline(PBS)
PBS is sometimes used to control pH when using structurally sensitive peptide's and help prevent aggregation and can, theoretically, optimize these specific peptide's structural shelf-life.
Therefore, given it's specific use case for certain peptides, PBS can stabilize the peptide solution at a fixed, tight pH range (typically near 7.4, matching human physiology) and provides the necessary sodium chloride ions to match the systemic osmotic pressure gradient.
There are instances where many long-chain peptides are highly sensitive to their "isoelectric point" (the pH where the peptide carries a net neutral charge, making it highly likely to clump and fall out of solution) this facilitates and/or substantially excelerates degradation. Reconstituting with a sterile PBS buffer can keep these specific peptide molecules consistently charged and fully dissolved, preventing degradation and ensuring smooth, rapid absorption through the subcutaneous capillary bed, while maintaining structural integrity of the potentially unstable nature (and particular molecular bonds) of some peptides... ensuring proper absorption and delivery of the peptides "signal" or "specific action" is being restored and functionally carried out!
This can be more commonly seen, when researching or exploring, outside the perimeters of your "typical, run-of-the-mill/Catalog Peptides" being offered by many middleman/vendors. This can also be seen in particular peptides being studied and researched in the Oncology space. Not functionally important, or needed, in the use of common peptides but there are definitely use cases to ensure biological stability of structurally sensitive compounds, often, in regards to pH, osmotic pressure, absorption curves, and at times... ensuring stability protection from innate immune responses (by an immediate attack by local tissue proteases) to prevent degradation before optimal absorption. In other words the mailman just delivered an envelope, without the encoded message inside!
May be a little long winded, but I hope this helps some understand why you sometimes see this PBS solution floating around research sites from time to time.
