Doctor trying to prescribe unhealthy weight loss
-
This post is mostly an info dump so I can vent to people that’ll understand what I’m talking about.
TLDR: skip to last paragraph
My husband has needed a hernia surgery for over a year. It’s a 6” hernia in his front abdomen where they cut to remove his kidney and the 13cm cancerous mass attached to it. No one would perform the surgery due to his high bmi since it wasn’t a life or death situation. 5’8” 300lbs.
I started him on low dose Reta at the beginning of the year and he works out 3-5 days a week lifting heavy. We focus on protein and moderately watch calories. He has lost about 100lbs in fat and gained about 50lbs of muscle. He is now 250 but looks like he’s lost significantly more than the 50lbs the scale claims.
Now that his bmi is below 40% a doctor at the university of Iowa is willing to do his surgery. This week during the visit the doctor said he would like him to lose more weight before his surgery in January, like 50 POUNDS!!! I told the doctor that was unhealthy and unrealistic. Then the doctor asked if my husband was diabetic because “if he’s diabetic I can prescribe tirzepatide and with a high restriction diet the 50lbs in three months is achievable”. The doctor then went on to say that he’s the same height as my husband and only weights 165lbs. I then made my husband pull up his body scan on his phone and we showed the doctor that my husband has more muscle (176lbs) than the doctors entire body weight. The doctor then zipped it real fast, and closed the consult with “stay the course with your current weight loss plan”.

Think I'd be looking for a new doctor...

My husbands cancer was something rare enough that the University has opened a study that’s just him. That means any scheduled procedures must be done at the University as a part of his study. The university of Iowa is ranked #3 in the country as far as hospitals go. To find a “better doctor” would mean a 12 hour drive to the Mayo Clinic, which the Mayo Clinic declined to see him initially, and why he ended up at university of Iowa.

Praying for you and your husband.
