IS HOSPIRA BAC WATER REALLY THE ONLY OPTION?
-
When someone tested 12 samples of bac water, only two passed muster for pH and correct percent of benzyl alcohol. One that passed was Lambda. I did not trust the results because it did not include a test for sterility, which is crucial. Besides, I had seen a negative review of Lambda bac water on Amazon that included a photo of a vial with debris floating in the sealed vial.
Bac water is no longer sold on Amazon, but ads for Lambda bac water keep popping up on my FB feeds. I responded to one ad with a question: “I expect you are using sterile vials. But, is the bac water itself also sterilized?”
The response was “Yes the vials are sterile. The BAC water contains 0.9% benzyl alcohol which the active sterilizing agent.”Benzyl Alcohol is bacteriostatic, not bactericidal. It inhibits bacteria from multiplying. It does NOT kill existing bacteria. And, it also does NOT destroy viruses or fungi. Adding 0.9% benzyl alcohol ONLY preserves the sterility of water that has ALREADY been sterilized!
Why can't we take 2 liters of distilled water (50 cents), stir in 19grams of benzyl alcohol ($2.00), and fill 200 10-mL vials ($39.00) with the solution. Seal the vials and cook them in a pressure cooker half filled with water at 10lbs of pressure (240deg F) for 10 minutes which would sterilize the vial, stopper, and the water, producing USP level sterility and very long shelf life. Distilled water is free of all minerals and its pH is between 5.8 and 6.8 (due to CO2 absorption). Benzyl alcohol remains stable to above 400deg F so the post bottling sterilization will not degrade it.
This home-made back water would be truly sterile, really contaminant free, and be the correct pH. The cost for the whole batch would be $42.00, or 21 cents for each 10mL vial.
Is anyone doing this? If not, why not?

Even simple food processing plants have elaborate cleaning procedures beyond the home kitchen capability. So, biological has to be more critical. Like, how to keep the alcohol from flashing out of solution? I would never do such a thing unless a specialized biochemist gave a really thorough procedure. And then would it be worth the cost savings?

People add BA to Sterile Water for Injection all the time. I thought of taking distilled water from Walmart, run it through another distillation at home (in a diy flow hood, then add the BA, then filter the solution into sterilize vials, also under the hood). Use sterile stoppers and cap it. Send a vial out for testing, or just leave out in the sun for a couple weeks and see what grows! My prepper plan should I have 20yo of peps and Peptidetest.com is out of BAC for a week until they restock.

@Paul_d3767 yes started making my own here recently due too the lack of supply too greedy people. i basically set up my own home lab and clean box for mixing so i can make my bac water and bac water wit acetic acid too get the ph right for the lab rats aod. i am using sterilized water because it still has all the salts and mins in it, my logic behind that decision is this, distilled water has zero anything other that h20 as its base no mins or anything, so when the reconstitution process transpires it will start too steal electrons and whatnot from the material being reconstituted prematurely breaking them down. distilled water has holes in the outer electron layer and will try to fill those holes any way possible and share those electrons with the media being reconstituted running a high chance of rendering the amino acid chains broken and not able too do what they were intended too, so thats why i am using basic sterilized water. there is less for a chance for those breakdowns due too those holes in the h20"s outer electron layer wanting too be "peptide scopic" i made up a word lol.. but basically bought all the raw supplies a beaker a stirrer along with ph testing strips you name it to do my own. i will try and take some pics too post up.
and acetic acid is basically vinegar.
personally have already started too in an emergency make some acetic back recon solution due too a batch of aod starting too gel, i am using genuine Hospira and still had a issue, so i drew 2ml of hosp and tested, the ph was a lil high so i dropped .3 units of 99.99% acetic into 2 ml of bac, tested and the solution was a solid 5.5. added .5 ml too the aod and it cleared right up. the aod is a 5mg vile already added .5 ml of bac and waited, started gelling so added the .5 bac with acedic and bam good too go the lab rat has been loving life. that fat rat was 5.15x 100 lbs ad is now down too 4.30x 100 lbs loving life!

If you have a link to the 12 sample BAC Water test you are referring to,would you mind sharing it ?
Interesting idea with the home brew BAC Water but unless you have a CGMP certified clean room in your home, there are so many points of potential contamination in most home environments, that I think it would be safer to use the Lambda water.
I use Hospira BAC for about 90+% of my reconstitutions. When I on occasion run out, I do use some Lamba which I have on hand, and have not had any issues.

Distilled water is not the same as sterile water. Sterile water is ensured to have extremely low threshold of endotoxins, pH around 5.5, and specific conductivity.
If you can ensure all that for your 50cent Walmart distilled water, sure go ahead.

Guys, be assured that making purified water is no easy task. Contaminates enter the system from everywhere. Components must be cleaned cyclically with 138+ degreeF caustic soda and/or 30% H2O2 - dangerous. Ions must be removed. pH must be controlled. Every component possible must be made from high purity teflon. I assure you that Hospira does not fire up their still and squirt steam and water into bottles. I know this from the semiconductor chemical industry. The chemical engineers are kept very busy making something as stupid as water.

@kenhnsy You can buy purified water and mix it with benzyl alcohol. You don't need to make it; it's pretty cheap by the gallon. It is what the testing labs use to test peptides and what Hospira mixes with Benzyl Alcohol. I have not done this, but I know people who have. They have also gotten it tested for PH, sterility, and content because they were thinking of manufacturing it.

@Stevepep You can do that with cell culture lab grade sterile water. It's not NDC so doesn't need script, dirt cheap, and has almost the same qualifications as pin grade sterile water.
